Advantages:

Collect little data, but data of high value.
Minimal resources.
Conceptually simple.
Allow detection of new attacks and vulnerabilities.
Operate in encrypted or IPv6 environments.

Disadvantages:
Limited field of view.
More address space works better.
Risk
Compromised machines could launch attacks.
